Philip Thalis and Peter John Cantrill will present the new and fully updated second edition of Public Sydney – Drawing the City, available in October 2026.

First published in 2013, the book examines the physical space of the city, its public rooms and public places, to better understand the structure, architecture and landscape of Sydney. An extensive set of drawings, photographs and essays documents the city today and its historical development.

In this webinar, Philip and Peter John will focus on the new second edition and the changes to Sydney since the book was first published.

Philip Thalis

Philip Thalis is a founding Principal of Hill Thalis Architecture + Urban Projects and has worked across architecture, urban design, public space and heritage. He has been Professor of Practice in Architecture at UNSW since 2007, with a research focus on the history of Sydney’s architecture and urban housing. He is co-author of Public Sydney – Drawing the City, served as a City of Sydney Councillor from 2016 to 2021, and is a Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects. He was awarded the AIA Gold Medal in 2024.

Peter John Cantrill

Peter-John Cantrill is an urban designer and architect with over 30 years’ experience across architecture, urban design, heritage and sustainability. A former Director at Tzannes Associates, he has taught and conducted research in Architecture and Urban Design at three universities in Sydney, including fourteen years as a lecturer in Urban Studies at UTS. He is currently Program Manager, Urban Design at the City of Sydney. His research on the urban formation of Sydney has resulted in numerous publications and public lectures, including Public Sydney, co-authored with Philip Thalis.
