Over the past 5 decades residential development in Sydney has become increasingly polarised between suburban expansion; horizontal sprawl, and TOD; vertical sprawl; as planning and development policies and economic factors have compounded to marginalise mid-rise infill housing. Accordingly, novel strategies and a viable scale are required to re-enable this ‘missing middle’.
This talk will identify this compounding landscape, why current policies will not work, and put forward an approach that prioritises frontage; with associated benefits that enable good streets, better parks, maturing landscape - to address urban heat island effect - while mitigating NIMBYism towards potentially favourable political adoption and success.
About the Speakers:
Angelo Korsanos, Peter McGregor and Peter Phibbs have teamed up to combine research and practice knowledge in Planning, Urban Design, the Architecture of Housing, and Land Economics to address NSW policy incongruity for much needed mid-rise housing in Sydney’s middle ring suburbs.
