Read Listen Talk - Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

The Read, Listen, Talk series is a forum for city shaping and urban design enthusiasts to gather, chat, analyze, and debate all things urban design.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

The hot topic was Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. We asked the question; how AI and machine learning can help make better public spaces for people?

Sian Johnson’s article tries to answer this question. Sian Johnson is a reporter and digital producer for ABC Melbourne. She previously worked as a reporter in Ballarat and Warrnambool.

The growing emergence and adoption of AI technology such as chat GPT is beginning to influence society, work, culture. Many of us are now questioning its benefits particularly from and efficiency perspective but also its disadvantages. How do we capitalise on its benefits particularly in the practice of urban design and across the built environment sector generally? What are the risks?

The article explores the potential of AI to easily visualise better streets and public spaces, but also explores the notion of data analytics and the potential to use AI in predicting climate benefits of improved streetscapes. There lies the potential to easily test different surfaces and addition tree canopy cover which would determine the most suitable design outcome to mitigate urban heat islands. Food for thought!!
